Feast Days of the Holy Cross
May 3rd finding of the Holy Cross
September 14th Exaltation of the Holy Cross
is one of the oldest Christian feasts.
A large part of the true cross, which reputedly had been discovered about 324 by St. Helena
was preserved in the Basilica of the Holy Cross built in Constantine over the site of
Calvary and Christ’s tomb. There as early as the fourth century, the Exaltation of the
Holy Cross was celebrated with as great solemnity as Easter and the Epiphany. From
Jerusalem the feast was adopted in Rome probably by the seventh century. Although this
feast was not observed in Gaul, another solemnity in honor of the Holy Cross was on
May 3rd. When both feasts became part of the Roman calendar, the feast of May 3rd was
celebrated in honor of the finding of the Holy Cross in the fourth century by St. Helena
and the feast of September 14th was kept in commemoration of the restoration of the Holy
Cross in the seventh century after it had been stolen by the Persians.
Chosroes, King of Persia, carried away the relic of the True Cross to Persia; but
Heraclius, ascending the throne of Judea defeated Chosroes and carried the Holy Cross to
the Basilica on Calvary 629 AD.
